What is the Archbishop's Chateau?

A Baroque residence in central Moravia that served the bishops and later archbishops of Olomouc. Bishop Stanislav I Thurzo began the building it replaced in 1500, in late Gothic with Renaissance detail. After the fire of March 1752, Bishop Hamilton brought in the imperial artists Franz Anton Maulbertsch and Josef Stern to decorate the halls, and their work is the core of what visitors see on the guided route today.

The picture gallery

Generally reckoned the second finest collection in the Czech Republic. Much of it was bought in Cologne in 1673 by Bishop Karel, and its best-known painting is Titian's <em>The Flaying of Marsyas</em>. Gallery access depends on the route and the season — if the Titian is your reason for coming, tell us before you book and we will confirm it is open on your date.

Two gardens, and why it matters

The UNESCO listing is a pair: the chateau and its gardens. The Podzámecká zahrada sits directly below the building in the English landscape style, while the formal Baroque Flower Garden (Květná zahrada), laid out by Filiberto Lucchese and Giovanni Pietro Tencalla, is a separate walled site about ten minutes' walk away. Our Via UNESCO ticket is the one that covers both halves; the Representation Halls ticket does not.

Amadeus was filmed here

If the interiors look familiar, that is because Miloš Forman shot parts of <em>Amadeus</em> at Kroměříž in 1984, using the chateau as a stand-in for the Hofburg in Vienna. The Assembly Hall in particular carries the look the film used.

What language is the tour in?

The chateau's regular guided routes are conducted in Czech, with printed foreign-language text you can follow along with as the guide moves through the rooms. We are telling you this up front because it changes how the visit feels: the rooms and the paintings carry it, but you will not be getting live English commentary. If English matters on your date, ask us before booking and we will check what is actually scheduled.

Planning your day

Kroměříž is in central Moravia, roughly an hour from Brno and forty minutes from Olomouc by road, and the chateau is a short walk from the main square. Allow about ninety minutes for the Representation Halls.

If you have the Via UNESCO ticket, add the ten-minute walk to the Flower Garden and as long as you like inside it. The chateau runs on a season and the Chateau Garden guided tour operates from June, so we confirm what is genuinely running on your date before we book.

The town around it

Kroměříž itself is small and worth the extra hour. The main square, Velké náměstí, sits a few minutes from the chateau gate and keeps its arcaded burgher houses; the town was rebuilt after the same 1752 fire that gutted the chateau, which is why the two read as one piece of Baroque planning. If you are travelling from Brno or Olomouc for the day, the practical order is chateau first on your confirmed departure, lunch on the square, then the Flower Garden in the afternoon when the light is better for photographs.

Who this is not for

If you want to wander at your own pace, this is the wrong place — the state rooms are seen on a guided route, at a fixed time, in Czech. The gardens are the part you can take slowly, and they are the half most people underestimate.
